The way that we react to the situations life presents to us depend entirely on our perspective. If we are pessimistic, a situation will seem much worse than it is. If we approach our day with a sense of optimism, however, the opposite is true. As a result of the suffering and hardships we have endured in the past as a result of our addictions, many of us have trouble maintaining a sense of optimism. Yet, when we shift our mindset and embrace a positive life perspective, we feel that we are better able to successfully face life, aiding us in the recovery process of personal development and spiritual growth. Perception defines our reality. Our actions and responses to events throughout our day are dependent on our attitude. Negativity breeds more negativity, but if we can maintain a positive mental mindset, we will see positive results from our interactions. Everyone can recall an experience when they were in a bad mood and the world, in turn, seemed like a bad place– every situation bothered us and exacerbated our pessimistic outlook. However, most people can also recall situation where they felt good and their happiness allowed them to approach every situation with ease and joy. Everyday in sobriety we attempt to begin our day with a sense of peace and serenity, so that we may carry it with us through every interaction and situation we encounter in life. We make it a habit to keep an eye out for feeling of selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear. When these negative feeling crop up in our day, we let them go immediately by praying, talking to someone about them, apologizing if we have harmed anyone, then turning out attention to helping someone else. This way our negativity is unable to infect the rest of our day or snowball into overwhelming pessimism that could potentially put our sobriety at risk. Soon, we find that we are moving through our days with love and tolerance, moving happily and easily through every interaction—all from simply letting go of negativity and shifting our perspective into one of positivity and hope.
