Does Sobriety have to be Boring?

Before I got sober, I was terrified of sobriety. How was I going to fill my free time without drinking? I was certain I was going to be bored to tears. I also thought that I didn’t need it, because I hadn’t lost my job or picked up any DUI’s. To me, sobriety was for those who hit bottom. How wrong I was!
Today, I love my sober life and here are some reasons why:

My Addiction Is No Longer Taking Over My Life

I was pleased to learn that sobriety simplified my life by making it more manageable, enjoyable, and productive. My recovery has also lead me to meet so many wonderful people who I am proud to call my friends.
I have a huge support system between all of my sober friends and the community at large. Getting sober led me to writing and in doing so, I have had the pleasure of hearing from folks in the community who have been helped by reading about my success as a sober person.

I Don’t Miss Out On Anything

When I was drinking, I wasn’t fully present in my own life. Some of the things I have forgotten much of due to being in alcoholic fog include:

  • Trips I’ve taken
  • Family gatherings
  • Sporting Events
  • Concerts
  • Dinners with friends

Now, that fog has lifted, and I can cherish and remember every single moment.

I No Longer Feel Sick Or Hungover

All I was really doing when I was drinking was chasing that high that alcohol brings and then struggling with all of the health problems it caused me. I suffered from nausea, migraine headaches, dizziness, and way too many colds. I was so rundown that I couldn’t really enjoy life.

I Can Remember Everything

I’ve had so many blackouts from drinking, and the fear and anxiety of waking up and not remembering a single thing from the night before was a horrible way to exist. One morning I woke up in my car in the middle of a snow-covered field. I had no idea how I had gotten there or even where I actually was. It was terrifying. Now I don’t have to worry about those types of things happening anymore. Instead, every morning I open my eyes is a gift.

Travelling Is So Much More Exciting

I’ve gone to a lot of different places, exciting places, places full of history and culture, and I can’t tell you much about a single one of those trips. I was too busy planning my itinerary around where all the nightclubs and bars were and too inebriated to appreciate my surroundings. Now, when I travel, I can take everything in and make wonderful memories to carry home with me.

I Am Healthy Now

I was sick all the time when I drank, either from being hungover or from being so rundown that I caught every virus that came down the pike. Since becoming sober, I have been able to:

  • Eat healthy
  • Begin an exercise program
  • See my doctor regularly
  • Have higher energy levels
  • Babysit my adorable niece
  • Volunteer at a local food bank
  • Pick up a few new hobbies

I drank because I wanted to fill the emptiness inside of me; what I didn’t realize was that my drinking was causing that emptiness. My sobriety has actually given me my life back, and a full, rich life without drinking is exciting. Every morning I wake up grateful for all that I have become. I have a life to look forward to now, and it’s never boring.
