Is Individualized Treatment More Effective?

Treatment is often necessary if one is to be successful in recovery. Addiction is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit, and treatment offers the opportunity for an individual to address the various aspects of their disease. It is important that treatment be tailored to each individual’s need if a client is to successfully recover. The responsibility, however, is on the individual to maintain a program of recovery if they are to be successful in staying sober after they leave treatment.
Relapse rates after an individual leaves treatment are roughly 40-60 percent. These statistics, however, do not take into account the quality of treatment being received. Effective treatment must be customized to a patient’s individual needs. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “Treatment varies depending on the type of drug and the characteristics of the patients. Matching treatment settings, interventions, and services to an individual’s particular problems and needs is critical to his or her ultimate success in returning to productive functioning in the family, workplace, and society.” Many men and women entering into treatment have cooccurring mental disorders that must be addressed if they are to remain sober. When a facility is capable of addressing individual needs, and treat more than just the client’s substance abuse, recovery becomes much more likely. There is also the question of adequate time spent in treatment. Research has found that success rates positively correlate with time in treatment. Ninety days has been shown to be an adequate amount of time for one to gain a likelihood of remaining sober, but duration is dependent on each individual client. The focus on the particular needs of each client cannot be understated. The NIDA explains, “A patient may require varying combinations of services and treatment components during the course of treatment and recovery. In addition to counseling or psychotherapy, a patient may require medication, medical services, family therapy, parenting instruction, vocational rehabilitation, and/or social and legal services. For many patients, a continuing care approach provides the best results, with the treatment intensity varying according to a person’s changing needs.” Addiction is complex and requires treatment to be tailored to each individual. Everyone has different factors that have influenced their addiction and effective treatment must take each of these factors into account to develop a successful treatment program.
