High-functioning depression does not look like how people think. It is more than just getting through the day. People who struggle often look like they are thriving at work and in their personal lives. From the outside, they are able to keep up appearances to everyone else. Major depression can be debilitating, but people with high-functioning depression can still accomplish what they need to do every day. This ruse can feel exhausting and debilitating after a while.
Persistent Depressive Disorder
One characteristic of persistent depressive disorder (PDD) is that it has the same symptoms as major depressive disorder (MDD), except the diagnosis criteria are slightly different. Thes symptoms may include:
- Changes in appetite
- Sleeping too much or not enough
- Poor concentration
- Fatigue
- Feeling hopeless
- Sleeping too much or not enough
- Thoughts of death or dying
The diagnosis can vary for people who have persistent depressive symptoms, but the gray area can be tricky for people who function at a high enough level to keep getting up every day to function while feeling depressed.
Moving Past Depression
Although people with persistent depressive symptoms are functioning, they might carry guilt or shame around being able to do things everyday others can’t. The low mood becomes acceptable and they don’t think they are going to change or be different. The reality is life is not meant to be enjoyed in the gray areas. There may be underlying causes for feeling this way, which can be investigated. To move forward in healing from a diagnosis of depression, a person can get the treatment that addresses the underlying causes, experience treatment for substance abuse or addiction issues, and address mental health holistically. Medication and therapy can usually address a person’s depressive symptoms and may improve mood and productivity. The key is to seek help for depressive symptoms or for a loved one who seems to be functioning every day but might need help.
