Green tea is one of the healthiest beverages you can drink. It is packed with nutrients and antioxidants that have proven benefits to the body and mind. It even has properties that can be preventative in the formation of certain diseases like cancer. In early sobriety, our health is beginning to be restored, and by drinking green tea we can reap medicinal benefits that can aid us in the recovery of our mind, body, and spirit. Green tea has been used in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine because of its health properties. It is one of the less processed forms of tea, so it contains a higher level of antioxidants and polyphenols. Antioxidants can prevent or delay cell damage, and polyphenols are micronutrients that can prevent degenerative diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease, as well as provide anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic effects. According to Healthline, “One of the more powerful compounds in green tea is the antioxidant Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), which has been studied to treat various diseases and may be one of the main reasons green tea has such powerful medicinal properties.” ECGC is so powerful that is has been shown to effectively treat sepsis, an abnormal immune system response to bacterial infection, according to a study by North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. Green tea can provide benefits to the heart, cardiovascular system, lower cholesterol, decrease risk of stroke, and aid in weight loss. At a brain level, green tea can enhance cognitive functions, especially in memory. A 2014 Psychopharmacology study entitled, Green tea extract enhances parieto-frontal connectivity during working memory processing, found that green tea can improve connectivity between different brain areas, which positively correlated with cognitive functioning. Furthermore, “Modeling effective connectivity among frontal and parietal brain regions during working memory processing might help to assess the efficacy of green tea for the treatment of cognitive impairments in psychiatric disorders such as dementia.” Dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other neuropsychiatric disorders can all be treated, or possible prevented, with green tea. Green tea can be a wonderful healing tool because it contains so many health-boosting properties. In recovery, our health should be a high priority, and green tea can be a great addition to a well-balanced diet.
