Medical Director Dr. Edward Kaufman Named as a 2017-2018 Best Doctor in America
Oceanfront is pleased to announce that our Medical Director Dr. Edward Kaufman has received national recognition for his superior work in the treatment of substance abuse and mental health disorders. Dr. Kaufman has been selected to the 2017-2018 Best Doctors in America List following the organization’s bi-annual polling of over 40,000 physicians nationwide. In addition, Dr. Kaufman has been distinguished in each of the last 13 reviews conducted for the Best Doctors list, which is audited and certified by Gallup. The Best Doctors poll is conducted as a confidential review for the large number of physicians contained in the Best Doctors database. The doctors each answer a simple question, “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer?” Best Doctors evaluates the results and vets against other inclusion parameters before naming the potential candidate a Best Doctor. Best Doctors never accepts compensation of any kind from physicians or hospitals in return for listing physicians in its database, nor does Best Doctors pay physicians to participate in the poll. A physician cannot apply to become a Best Doctor. The only way to be selected to the database is to be nominated and voted on by other Best Doctors physicians. Best Doctors develops and maintains detailed profiles of each physician in the database through in-depth, ongoing research. David Harrison, the United States Medical Director for Best Doctors, said “Being named a Best Doctor is a singular honor recognizing the approximately four percent of U.S. doctors from whom other doctors would seek care. Only those who earn the consensus support of fellow physicians are included. Best Doctors never accepts compensation of any kind from physicians or their organizations for inclusion, nor do we pay physicians to participate in the poll.” Dr. Kaufman has been practicing psychiatry for over 40 years. He blends his knowledge of psychology, family systems and psychopharmacology to meet the client’s individual needs. He was a former president of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and Editor of the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse. Dr. Kaufman received his medical training at Jefferson University, USC and Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has authored 3 books, edited 5 more, and written over 200 articles and book chapters on family therapy, alcoholism, drug addiction, anxiety and depression. He was a full professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Irvine, where he was the Director of Psychiatric Services, Residency and Medical Students Education and private alcohol/drug services. Dr. Kaufman’s latest work as an author is the book Tales of a Prison Psychiatrist: Fifty Years of Criminalization of the Mentally Ill and Addicted. This work was published in April by Gray Matters Consultants. Dr. Kaufman carefully describes the evolution through multiple systems including courts, legislation, state hospitals, community mental health centers, jails, prisons, therapeutics communities, homeless shelters and elite private centers. His story is not a dry academic tale, but uses human stories of mentally ill, addicted patients and inmates alongside those of judges and mental health professionals. This book also provides workable evidence-based prevention and treatment programs, presented as alternatives to incarceration, plus poignant case histories of individuals who have benefited from such programs. Oceanfront Recovery offers a variety of drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs. Our passionate team of care providers, including the distinguished Dr. Kaufman, utilizes cutting-edge treatment modalities and provides clinically appropriate and therapeutic tools to our clients.
