If you have chosen to seek help for addiction, that was a conscious decision that will benefit you the rest of your life, including family and loved ones. When you put the work in, you will discover how much better life can be. It has likely been a struggle for quite some time to get to this point, so savor this victory and remember, recovery is a choice that you will need to make each and every day.
Coping with Loss
One of the main reasons people become addicted to any substance is typically to mask pain or loss. Addiction also takes more than it gives which is why it leaves people feeling so isolated and alone. Some other ways addiction pretends to help you cope with loss but actually makes it worse:
- Addiction takes your will to choose how, when, and how much you do drugs or drink
- Addiction takes you to places you never thought you would go in order to feed the addiction
- Addiction compels you to destroy many parts of your life
- Addiction harms your family and makes you throw away what is most important to you
- Addiction can take your life, including health, finances, and longevity
The main thing to keep in mind with addiction recovery is that you are now taking your personal power back from addiction. You are working to recover what was lost and get it all back. It means to recover:
- Your will to avoid triggers to go back to the way things were with addiction
- Your soul by taking a moral inventory of strengths and weaknesses including any harm done to make amends
- Your sanity to see how you can make better choices and learn coping skills
- Your finances from throwing money away on things that don’t serve you to put towards things that will help you grow
- Your family to be present and focused on them not addiction
- Your life from the damage done physically and psychologically
Open to Possibilities
Everyone says once you are in recovery, your life will get better. This does not mean it’s all gravy from here on out. Realistically, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to stay sober. It’s not for the faint at heart, but it is available to everyone who wants it. Addiction deprives you of discovering who you are and what you are capable of. You just need to receive what’s yours with open hands. Letting go of the past to move forward into possibilities will help you see the bumps on the way are just growth points for you to learn and expand understanding of your calling. That’s what it means to choose recovery: you work to regain what is lost and in doing so find yourself along the way.
