The transition from in-patient recovery to everyday life can be difficult for a lot of people. When you return sober to an environment where your addiction was formed or fostered, it’s much easier to relapse. Thankfully, substance abuse aftercare specialists can help you develop positive habits and adequately prepare for “real life.” A sober living home or halfway house is a kind of transitional living space for people who have completed a substance abuse treatment program. Aftercare facilities like this provide comfort and routine, similar to being at home, as well as the structure that will help you maintain your sobriety. If you’re concerned about the turbulent transition period after you first get sober, researching halfway homes is a good first step.
Oceanfront Recovery operates an excellent sober living home out of Huntington Beach, and we also have the resources to connect you with various halfway houses across Orange County so you can find a place that fits your individual needs. We want our clients at Oceanfront Recovery to feel supported the whole way, from detox to inpatient or outpatient treatment and from treatment to aftercare and transitional living. If you or a loved one is in need of substance abuse treatment, don’t wait to do something about it. We offer a variety of different treatment programs and want to find the best one for you. What Can You Bring to a Halfway House?
Your living space in a halfway house should be comfortable and accessible, but many halfway houses have restrictions on what can be brought in. You should also be certain to pack essentials, such as toiletries, clothing, medication, identification, and chargers. Some facilities may also ask you to bring your own linens and towels.
Each individual halfway house sets its own rules, so you should check ahead of time for packing restrictions. Most aftercare facilities don’t allow fireworks or weapons, and many don’t allow pets. Items containing alcohol, including mouthwash, hand sanitizer, and alcohol-based cleaning products, likely won’t be allowed either.
Common Halfway House Rules
In order to live in a designated sober living environment, you must obey any rules and regulations set there. Again, rules will be different from facility to facility, but here are a few that you can expect when preparing for a halfway house:
- You must stay sober while staying in a halfway house. This means abstaining from alcohol and drugs for your entire stay. Some halfway houses may enforce drug tests.
- No fighting with other residents. No sober living home will allow violence, and interpersonal issues will need to be resolved peacefully.
- Most halfway houses enforce a curfew, and you must be home, and sometimes in your own living space, by that time each night.
- At most halfway houses, you will need to contribute to a household chore list. Some facilities assign chores randomly each week, and others may use a form of chore wheel.
- Most sober living homes will also ask you to attend 12-Step recovery meetings or another kind of aftercare treatment.
