The steps of recovery don’t come to a screeching halt after completing a substance abuse treatment program. Although completing a program should be celebrated, you still need to adjust to life without treatment in an environment that will never be controlled the way a facility is. You’ve worked hard, no matter the circumstances, to make positive changes in your habits while your addiction was treated, but you may not feel ready to go it alone just yet. There’s nothing wrong with that. Halfways houses, also known as sober living homes, exist for a reason so you can more easily transition from treatment to normalcy.
Oceanfront Recovery has a sober living home in Huntington Beach, as well as the means to connect you with a variety of halfway houses across Orange County, available at different price points and with different amenities. When you work with Oceanfront Recovery, we want to help you feel supported the whole way, from detox to inpatient or outpatient treatment and from treatment to aftercare and transitional living. We offer various treatment programs and want to find the best one for you. Contact us today by calling 877.296.7477 for more information about our programs.
What is a Halfway House?
A halfway house or sober living home operates as a transitional living space for those working toward recovery from substance abuse. These homes offer the comfort and routine of being at home along with the structure that may be needed for you to maintain your sobriety. Accountability is at the forefront of sober living, and staying in a halfway house affords you the ability to monitor yourself and your urges with a bit of outside help. For this same reason, some halfway houses may require drug testing or breathalyzer exams.
People stay in halfway houses for different lengths of time according to their individual needs, but you could expect to be there between three and twelve months. Many people go back to work or school or begin looking for a job during this stage of recovery. You’ll experience more freedom in a sober living home than at an inpatient program, but you’ll still be expected to attend recovery meetings of some kind. Most people in a given halfway house have already completed some treatment program and are in the same boat as you are.
How Transitional Living Helps
Transitional living comes with a host of benefits for those that choose to stay in a sober living home after treatment:
- Managing the transition. A halfway house will allow you to re-introduce yourself to the day-to-day more carefully.
- Staying on track. Staying sober directly after completing a program isn’t always easy, but sober living offers support that can lower your chances of relapse dramatically.
- Sober friends. Staying in a halfway house will also equip you with a new, sober social circle. You’ve worked hard to achieve and maintain sobriety, but you may have friends that still use the substances you’re working to avoid.
- Education or career coaching. Many halfway houses offer resources to help their guests return to school or the workforce.
