New year, new you is what they say. Sobriety is more than just hitting a new year and resolving to stay clean in recovery. Uncomfortable feelings arise and they have to go somewhere. When it comes to setting proper boundaries, it helps to have a plan in place to help set a positive focus for recovery at any point throughout the year. Setting boundaries can make you feel more empowered and healthy, setting you up for long-term success.
Healthy Boundary Setting Tips
When you are looking to set healthy boundaries, it helps to look at it from a holistic perspective. You will need to have some tips to follow to get you started, but it is really about finding your own pathway forward:
- Don’t be afraid to say ‘no.’ Sometimes this is hard, and that is perfectly fine. You should not feel you are not able to be honest with how you feel. If you are tired and people want to visit, it is okay to tell them to wait. It is okay to respect your own needs above those of others but it may take time to learn how to do this effectively.
- Know how people respond to your boundaries is not your responsibility. Not does not mean let them negotiate or let you back down to make you feel better. Boundaries only work then they are applied consistently.
- Consider your own needs. If a friend or loved one asks you to do something but you may already feel overwhelmed. It is okay to say you’ll get back to them. Letting people know you can get back to them later is okay.
- Leaving is okay. Having an exit strategy is key for people in recovery. Whether you are telling a host you have to leave after dinner or deciding to say goodbyes early, know it is okay to leave the party when it feels right to go. Not staying longer than you want is about taking ownership of what you want versus doing what is expected.
Setting boundaries takes time. It will not happen overnight and prepare yourself. Not everyone will respect or be happy with your boundaries. If your boundaries are not respected, you may want to seek other support from people who will be there for you, listen, and honor what you want. It is important to stick to your boundaries and not fudge on them because someone asked you to do something you were not comfortable doing. It is about putting yourself and your recovery first. This is your life, own it, and don’t let anyone tell you differently.
