Struggling with indecision is like being stuck in the mud. It is no fun whatsoever. Making decisions might be difficult but, like with anything, you get better with practice. With any skill you want to get better at, you need to find times and ways of getting your foot in the door and just doing it.
Why It’s Hard
Fear of making the wrong decision is one of the reasons many people hesitate when faced with a choice. You may be afraid of failure or the consequences of success. You may worry what other people will think. Perfectionism may be getting in your way. If you feel out of practice, especially if you haven’t made many big decisions in life, it can feel difficult to just make the decision and go with it.
Ups and Downs
Indecision does not always have to have a negative connotation. Sometimes, hesitation gives you valuable time to think about the situation. It gives you the chance to gather more information and weigh the facts. If you cannot make a quick decision, it may be a sign the choice does matter. If you cannot make a quick decision, it may be a sign the choice really matters but it might be a warning you may be about to make the wrong decision. The downside of indecision is that you might miss an opportunity if you wait. You could lose out on something you really want or, if you decide to wait too long, you give up your power of choice. Someone else might get hired for that job you wanted or that home you wanted might go to another buyer.
Moving Ahead
Even if you feel indecisive, that’s okay. Lacking confidence in your ability is a mindset. Take a step back and regroup. Become more decisive with these steps:
- Forget the fear: figure out what it is you want and write it down. If you are considering a job change but worried about the risk,s maybe the new job will pay less. Consider how to reduce income and how that will impact your life.
- Tune in to how you feel. There comes a time no matter how much information you have, the decision will not be easier. The best time is always now to make some decisions to get your life on track.
- To become an expert, you have to practice small. Start with little daily decisions. Decide what to have for lunch, pick a route to work, and go to a store knowing what you will buy.
- Decisions seem bigger than they are. If you are struggling, ask yourself if it matters in 10 years what you do. You can sell the car, or move back, or choose something else. You may quit your job if you like. Try not to take the decision more seriously than you need to.
The bottom line is to trust yourself and your instincts. If you are struggling with choices, know your strengths lie in it always being your choice. Nobody is perfect or always chooses correctly. You can rest in knowing your decisions will help you make a better choice down the road, too.
