Love and logic parenting is a way to set healthy boundaries with your loved one and provide all the love, empathy, and compassion they need, while not enabling maladaptive behaviors. Love and logic focuses on maintaining accountability and letting a child learn how to be responsible for themselves, while continuing to love and support them. Accountability is a profound theme in recovery. Addicts and alcoholics in recovery need to learn to take accountability for their thoughts, choices, actions, and behaviors, in order to stay sober. Deception, manipulation, evasion, and other maladaptive behaviors is the way many addicts and alcoholics maintain their using. Exceptionally skilled at causing exhausting arguments, getting their way, getting their way regardless, addicts and alcoholics have to reprogram themselves to be more accountable. Being accountable means “required or expected to justify actions or decisions”. Simply put, being accountable means being responsible. Owning responsibility for their addiction in the past and their recovery in the present as well as the future is critical for lifetime recovery. Rather than rely on consequences or responsibility from the parents, children learn to see it for themselves. Too often consequences are programmed as being at someone else’s hand. Instead of wondering, “what will my family do to me if I do this to them?” the child or adult child is more empowered to think, “what will I do to me if I do this to myself?” Parents and family members are accused of becoming codependent upon their loved one’s addiction, thriving on enabling their poor decision making. Parents aren’t supposed to be authority figures, but support systems. Rather than reprimand, parents should be reinforcing lessons. Your time has come to stop policing your child and start loving them as they learn to be independent. Oceanfront Recovery wants to help.
