Perhaps you have been addicted to drugs and alcohol for ten years, on and off, but consistently enough for the last ten years. Finally, you’re ready to go to treatment. For thirty days, maybe 45-60, you’re in the residential setting. You live in a safe place, you have nursing staff awake and available 24 hours a day, you detox completely, and you start to gain some insight on some underlying issues you’ve been neglecting to confront. Then, you’re done. Compared to the ten years you’ve been drinking and using, you’ve now spent 30 days without those patterns of behaviors. That’s just 30 days compared to 3,650 days- which is less than one percent. Needless to say, more time in treatment means spending more time in a healing, sober, therapeutic setting stacked against years of active using and drinking. Intensive outpatient treatment after residential treatment is a good option for stepping down through the treatment process slowly removing structure and increasing independence. By staying in treatment longer through intensive outpatient and transitional care, you have a safe place to stay as you continue to overcome cravings for drugs and alcohol. As more time passes, the brain heals more and continues to reveal new information. As new information comes up, you are in a safe environment where you can confront and learn from that information- like triggers, trauma, and cravings. Within just thirty days you aren’t likely to be an expert in healthy communication, choice and decision making, or stress management. You haven’t completely reprogrammed your brain to make total sense of the world yet and you need like-minded peers, as well as the guidance of addiction specialists to guide you. Intensive outpatient programs offer you all of these abilities and opportunities as you continue to recover. Building a community of brothers in treatment helps you gain confidence from other men who are struggling and working hard like you are. Working with each other to grow, change, and overcome, you gain more knowledge about relationships, giving feedback, taking feedback, and trust. Life is meant to be lived. After 30 days of treatment, you will have more tools and information about living life clean and sober than you did before your residential treatment program. After another 30, 60, 90 days or more, on the other hand, you can have an even greater wealth of knowledge and insight.
