Addiction is complex with multiple influences. Intelligence is one you may not have thought of when considering the correlation to addiction. Specialists look at the correlation between addiction and intelligence as quite surprising and highly interesting. Learn more about why scientists are studying this connection and how it can affect how we view addiction.
Intelligence Studies
In 2011 a study found children with higher IQs in 1970 were found to be more likely to abuse drugs later in life. Why this correlation existed stumped doctors and scientists for some time. Why did it seem people were more likely to turn to drugs if they were more intelligent? Most people understand the risk factors for addictive behavior but highly intelligent people did not seem immune to the challenges. An interesting hypothesis was created to address this correlation.
- People who are highly intelligent are also easily bored with the everyday, mundane activities and look for novel ways to push the body and mind. Drugs may be dangerous and risky but it is also a way to entertain and challenge the mind
- New challenges are a way to keep the mind busy and also seek success towards personal progress. Overcoming challenges regularly is something people of high intelligence crave
- Highly intelligent people want to fuel their creative fires and seek ways of creating on a higher plane. Drugs and alcohol are ways to increase productivity and creativity for some people, especially those of higher intelligence.
Mental Health and Intelligence
One of the most commonly suggested links between addiction and intelligence is emotional stability. People who are highly intelligent may also struggle with mental health issues more than the average person. The link suggests people with high intelligence suffer from the influences of drug and alcohol use which drive addiction. Intelligence and emotional instability are connected for a few reasons:
- If you are highly intelligent, you likely don’t slow down to process information which can lead to depression or frustration
- Intelligent people suffer from higher levels of depression and despair because of struggles to fit in with everybody else or feel like they are understood
Never fear if you or someone you love is highly intelligent. This does not mean you are more likely to become addicted to drugs or alcohol. This just means you may be more likely to have some challenges but you can overcome those with support and help of loved ones. Life is always better when we feel understood by others, so finding treatment options to suit your needs could be just the thing you need to move forward with your life.
