Treatment is a great place for many people to experience recovery for the first time. Feelings of anxiousness and fear are common and may take the form of dread at what lies ahead as you think about what is coming down the road. Trying to find the silver lining it in all can be daunting but you are not alone. Finding ways to lighten up and have fun can bring levity to an otherwise challenging time but one that can bring new insights and even joys.
Who Makes You Laugh
Ask who you love to laugh at including comedians or comic talent on television. Think about the type of humor you like and what makes you laugh out loud. If you are not sure, think about the following types of comedy to see if any pique your interest:
- Slapstick – exaggerated physical movement and facial expressions are the means of eliciting laughter or tripping and falling over for laughs
- Parody or Spoof – a send-up of another movie, person, or situation designed to get laughs
- Romantic comedy – “rom com” movies include a love story about a couple who fall in love and include funny parts along the way
- Screwball comedy – mix of slapstick and romantic comedy
- Dramedy – a mix of drama and comedy
There are hybrid genres as well that combine a few of these and some include comedy horror, sci-fi comedy, military comedy, and others. Everyone has a personal leaning towards what type of movies bring laughter and light hearted feelings. Nothing may seem funny in recovery because it’s all quite serious but it can be fun to laugh at things for a time to lighten the heaviness.
Crack a Book
Now is as good a time as any to try something new. Whether or not you love to read, give a good book a try. Askou a local librarian or bookstore employee to help you pick up a good book. You may also love browsing online for things and want to check it out. Finding a book that takes a humorous look at life can help bring some different perspective to your experience at the moment. It also never hurts to phone a friend. Ask someone you like that sees things from a different perspective or is funny to bring you some peace and joy. When you adopt a positive attitude, you are more likely to see the light through the darkness and feel motivated to take on tough problems. This outlook can extend beyond current circumstances to new possibilities and realities down the road.
