Have you noticed how likely it is that we share success stories but are not so sure about sharing failures? It is easy to attribute our own success to our brilliance but lack abilities to see outside circumstances beyond our control. This is called the ‘Fundamental Attribution Error,’ and it can fundamentally shift how you are selling yourself out in the world.
The Truth
The truth has been around a very long time but human beings are great at running away from things or hiding from difficult realities. Embracing it is very hard but also freeing. Truth-telling in the business world is important to success. The business world is often built on perception over truth when the reality is, the truth can set people free. Figuring out what truth to embrace is the best place to start.
Start Small
Admit that you were not actually as good as you think you were. It’s starting small, humbly, by admitting that it is not all about you that makes a big difference in business. Take a step back and acknowledge you’re not a great mogul or business person for developing some new technology, app or software but that you still have lots to learn and plan to keep growing as the years go by.
Get Positioned for Success
You may be wondering now whether you have a job because you’re lucky or whether you’re meant to be there on your own merits. You can start to think ‘what did I do to deserve all this?’ and the scripts run through your head. Getting into your conscious and subconscious mind is important but don’t freak yourself out. You may start to attribute your success to your own self or to other people but you do deserve a break. Over analyzing yourself can be detrimental to your own success as much as not being humble enough to admit when you make mistakes. Earning is an attitude and effort is all about action. Whether you decide to take credit for your successes and failures or apply it to making better decisions rests in whether you believe in yourself more or other people. Letting go of the notion that you alone are the reason you’re successful will do more to help you than thinking you got there all on your own. There are many other people who need to play a role in your success as well as your failure, but owning up to how well (or poorly) you did is important. Stop selling yourself short and start selling yourself long. Focus on the long game of success and build on it piece by piece. This is the way to build a successful business, as well as a life, brick by brick, day by day, success by failure by success, then failure and hopefully more success.
