Open mic is maybe a space you would not otherwise think about when it comes to sober fun. The thing about open mic is that it often happens in bars and pubs (places where sober people generally avoid). Sometimes it can pop up in coffee houses, bookstores and other places which are perfect for you if you want an outlet to share your story. Here’s why you should consider giving it a try.
Clean Fun
It may be time to get creative and find an outlet you can really enjoy that lets you express yourself and brings you together with other sober people. Open mic at a cafe or coffee shop is an excellent way to be vulnerable while trying something new and fun. Wherever you are on the journey to recovery, it is a good thing to try different outlets of expression because recovery is hard work. It can also be lonely, which is why it is good to share your story with others.
Sharing Memories
Many people who go to recovery open mic events have their own stories of overdosing on drugs, blacking out from drinking, getting caught shoplifting, or otherwise hitting ‘rock bottom’ with their addiction. Just because you are clean and sober does not mean that past life is not still part of who you are. Memories of those hard times of living with addiction may be behind you, but they are still part of your story. They may also be helpful to others people and even cathartic for you to share. Sharing the struggle is often what makes it easier to keep fighting every day, but it is not for everyone. Sharing memories or hearing others share can be triggering so it depends on every individual how you will handle that.
Fighting for Others
Sharing the recovery challenges is also a way to support others along the journey who may be struggling but thinking about how to get clean and sober. Instead of holding onto your story, releasing it when you are ready can be a great way to help advocate why treatment matters. People see what you do and when you are able to put your experience out in the world it can often be a beacon of light and hope for others. You may even meet others who are wrestling with this addiction or know a loved one and you can offer up your story for them. The goal of recovery open mic is also to just get up there and have fun. Share the interesting, funny, and downright weird things you experienced through the addiction journey and into recovery. Sometimes humor can offset the challenging parts of addiction and recovery that often get overlooked. Why not give it a try and find out if you have the chops. You might just find you really enjoy it and, better yet, get to help yourself and others along the sober journey.
